2016 Greenland Expedition

2016 Greenland Expedition

Our Beginning

The story of GEaR is a seemingly impossible mission in the arctic.  We all met as members of the Duck Hunt in 2012, an expedition in eastern Greenland whose aim was to find the wreckage of a U.S. Coast Guard plane that crashed in 1942 and was buried deep within a glacier.  The likelihood of finding a missing plane whose location was unknown in the vast expanses of ice was infinitesimal.  Yet the search was a success, as documented in the fascinating historical account and New York Times bestseller Frozen In Time by Mitchell Zuckoff.

“The only thing worse than what happened to these men is not bringing them home to their families.”

— John Bradley, FOUNDER

Our Mission

GEaR is the next chapter in the saga of search and recovery that began in 1942.  Our philosophy is that a mission of this complexity is most effectively achieved through a combination of technical mastery, close collaboration with public and private partners, and thorough planning.  With proven techniques, the right tools for the job, and meticulous planning, we hope to bring a close to the story of the Duck by finding the men aboard and helping to bring them home.
